The 35th annual J&B Met is set to take place at Kenilworth Racecourse on Saturday, January 28, 2011.
The social event draws over 50 000 people to the race each year and will showcase South Africa’s top horses competing for a R2.5 million stake over a 2 000 metre course. This year’s theme is “made different”, a theme that challenges the conventional attire associated with this spectacular day. This year’s theme requires supporters to use old, recycled materials and remodelled fashion items to make up their ensembles.
Skye Grove, Communications Manager at Cape Town Tourism, says; “The J&B Met is one of the signature events on Cape Town’s annual event calendar – not only is the event one of Cape Town’s biggest summer parties, but it generates more than R65 million for the Western Cape economy.
This year’s theme of “made different” encourages people not to waste but to see the beauty and multiple use of otherwise obsolete items. We applaud the conservation efforts of the J&B Met team in their bid to conserve the environment around Kenilworth Racecourse as they donate a percentage of the ticket sales towards funding the Kenilworth Conservation Area, which is home to a number of protected plant and wildlife species, including twenty two red data species that are nearing extinction.
These two major aspects of the event harmoniously parallel our thinking behind Responsible Tourism and giving back.”
This year sees Cape Town Tourism’s first package deal for the J&B Met. Together with UbuntuDeal, Mango Airline and the Southern Sun Newlands, Cape Town Tourism is offering return flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town, two nights’ accommodation as well as transfers and tickets to the J&B Met for only R2 479 per person sharing.
“This package deal not only offers the best in travel, but is also excellent value for domestic visitors wanting to travel to Cape Town to attend the event. In terms of domestic market, Cape Town Tourism’s event strategy for 2012 focuses on short city breaks packaged around events. We are partnering with the airline and broader tourism industry to bring great Cape Town event travel deals; particularly around our winter events calendar. With these packages we continue to demonstrate that Cape Town is easily accessible and a great place to visit any time of the year for many different reasons”, Grove concludes. The J&B Met is a highlight on Cape Town’s events calendar bringing people from around the country together for a glamorous day at the track – from designers, fashionistas, socialites and celebrities, to über-stylish citizens and horse racing enthusiasts, the J&B Met is where you will find them this weekend.
